| 内容記述 | Shakespeare often associates the tongue with the eye. I discuss how this association took place and argue that, in the Sonnets, these images are connected by means of book imagery. Shakespeare writes that books talk to people through tongues, and this imagery seems to have been the origin of his association. I also take up the word tongue-tied and explain how tongue and eye are connected through the sound [ai]. I investigate all the instances of [ai] in the earlier sonnets, and point out how Shakespeare was influenced by the sound [ai] when he used the word eye. | |||||
