I discuss how this association took place and argue that, in the Sonnets, these images are connected by means of book imagery. Shakespeare writes that books talk to people through tongues, and this imagery seems to have been the origin of his association. I also take up the word tongue-tied and explain how tongue and eye are connected through the sound [ai].
