| 内容記述 | The obituary notice of Melville in 1891 occasioned the reawakening of interests in Melville. But it was in the 1920s that the outline of his biographical fact was established and his literary achievements came to be reexamined. In the 19th century literary people were writing for the popular reading society whereas In the 20th century, especially since the mid-twentieth century，Typee criticism was exclusively written and produced by the academics intended for the same academic scholars. In the 1930s the old arguments about fact or fiction were once again raised and continued to the 1940s. With the arrival of the new criticism, close textual analysis and theorizing about the thematic and symbolic word of the book became way of critical study. Although the question of the primitivism was still the center of the controversy and the tendency of either or reading was going on, Typee chapter of D. H. Lawrence’s book exerted a deep influence upon the criticism after him. Milton Stern and others in the1950s, 60s, 70s elaborated the idea of Lawrence and constructed a thematic unity that concluded that Typee indicates “a recognition of richly mixed yearning for and final reputation of the primitive. Literary people used to consider that the world was considered only of western civilization and primitives. The 1980s saw a change in the way of looking at primitives. It is no longer possible to write without the knowledge of the danger of “ orientalism. ” Critics noticed not a single voice of self-introduction or apologies for being called primitives had been uttered from those who were included in the category. The primitives are, after all, the creation in the imagination of those who faced strangers. With this common acknowledgement more convincing reevaluation of Typee is and will be being made and a reappraising of whole Typee criticism should be done. | |||||
