In the quadrangle map (1:50,000)of Kitami, in the central part of the district,277 landslide configurations were identified in aerial photographs of 1 : 20,000 in scale. Most of them occurred in prehistoric times, but recent landslides with main scarp lacking in vegetation were also recognized. Most landslide configurations are concentrated in the southeastern areas which are underlain by the Eocene to Oligocene Sakaemori Formation, which consists of conglomerate,mudstone and tuffaceous breccia,and the oligocene Tatsukobu and Miocene Tsubetsu Formations,which consist mainly of alternating beds of hard shale and siltstone and mudstone with interbeds of tuff.
