内容記述 The sensitive clay layers were found along the margin of Kitami basin, Hokkaido. This clay(Kitami clay)is very sensitive,and change into fluidal mud by a little remolding. The direct shearing test proved the sensitivity ratio as 50?120 which is equivalent to those of extra quick clay groups. The properties of Kitami clay are as follows:   1.The physical properties of this clay are similar to those of the “quick clay” found in southern Scandinavia Peninsula and eastern Canada.   2.Thc clay layers are interbedded in the Kutcharo volcanic ash formations.   3.The diatoms contained in the clay,the diatoms show that the sedimentational environment was fresh water, and further half of the specimens are high land lacustrine type.   4.The radiocarbon(C^14)dating for wood fragments in this clay proved that the sedimentation of this clay dates from 23,000 to 26,800 years B.P.   5.This sensitive clay(Kitami clay)resembles to the varved clay with its sedimentary age, fresh water diatoms, and lamina of summer layer and winter layer.   6.The observation by scanning electron microscopy proves that the sensitivity of Kitami clay is caused by its“chain structure”.   7.The clay minerals in Kitami clay are identified as halloysite and kaolinite by x-ray diffraction,electron microscopy, and differential thermal analysis.
