| 内容記述 | In up-to-date theories of syntax and semantics strong proposals have been made about the transformational relationship between the definite article and the process of relativization. However，many facts do not justify such a treatment of the article and，oddly enough， little justice has been done to the so-called indefinite article. This may be because of the decidedly wrong assumption that it gives the basis on which to introduce the definite article. The articles in English are essentially a matter of reference and they are to be defined as proclitic elements indicating the Speaker's presuppositions about the Hearer's identifying knowledge. The many subtle characteristics they display contrastively are statable in terms of the intricate relationships between the speech factors. This paper aims to revalue some of the important conclusions from a syntactical point of view and justify the assumption suggested above by giving a uniform account of the variously discussed problems about the articles. | |||||
