Monodisperse microspheres were obtained in quantitative yields by using seed particles with hydrophilic surface [PS-N-(hydroxymethyl)acrylamide (HMAM), PS-acrylamide (AM), PS-methacrylamide (MAM), and PS-N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAM)]. While using seed particles with hydrophobic surface [PS-N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM)], all of the polymer was coagulated and no polymer particles were obtained after the polycondensation. The particles prepared with large excess dithiol monomers had high mercapto group contents. The distribution of mercapto group on the particle was estimated by Ellman method using both N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and a mixture of ethanol and water as solvents, indicating that most of mercapto groups were localized on the surface, in the particles with high mercapto group contents.
