Three reaction systems of membrane reactors were employed ; a separate-diffusion membrane reactor (s.d.m.r.)in which an O_2 stream was introduced inside the membrane and a C_2H_4 stream outside separately ; a mixing-diffusion (m.d.) m. r. in which a C_2H_4 -O_2-N_2 mixture was introduced inside and an N_2 stream outside ; and a forced-flow (f. f.) m. r. in which all gases were passed through the pores of the membrane.  EO yield was the highest in m.d.m.r., indicating the advantage of this system : reaction equilibrium may have shifted to the products by sweeping them more quickly out of the reactor than in the cases of the other two reactors.  Dependency of EO selectivity on the gas flow rate was different in the three membrane reactors. There was little dependency in any side of s.d.m.r., while selectivity was at its maximum at 80 ml/min in the sweep-gas side of m.d.m.r..
