A cattle bone-originated HAp (r-HAp) had two carbonates, OH-substituted and P04- substituted, and chemically synthesized HAp (s-HAp) had only the latter carbonate. This difference was ascribed to the increased calcium deficiency of r-HAp. Partial substitution of Sr for Ca caused expansion of the P-O bond and subjected the HAp structure to stress.
