I will point out that one of the differences between these two collections of sonnets consists of the appearance and disappearance of Cupid，the God of Love. I will try to show how much importance the imagery of Cupid has for Sidney's poetry，because Cupid is one of the images deriving from Italian sonnets，especially Petrarch's. I have traced the origin of English sonnet sequences from Petrarch in a previous paper，and I'd like to place Sidney's sonnets definitely in that stream. The imagery of eyes is another important topic of my paper，and I will show some evidence of how that imagery is associated with Cupid in Sidney's sonnets. I will also try to solve the mystery of why Shakespeare did not use the imagery of Cupid in his sonnets.
