Upon annealing the thin film at 300°C, a phase transition from hydroxide to oxide was observed. In addition, the color of the thin films changed from whitish to yellow-orange. The vertically aligned nanosheet structures were well preserved during annealing. When the annealing temperature was increased to 450°C, individual nanosheets of Ni-Co oxide were embedded with sub-level nanoparticles and nanopores. The annealing treatment affected the color contrast and switching time. The Ni-Co oxide thin film exhibited higher optical contrast (53%, λ = 700 nm) when annealed at 300°C than when annealed at 450°C. The coloring and bleaching times (1–4 s) of the Ni-Co oxide thin films with annealing treatment were faster than those (6–18 s) of the Ni-Co hydroxide thin film without annealing.
