While Japan had been experiencing a steady increase in inbound\ntourism in recent years, the pandemic caused a sharp decline in visitor numbers in 2020. This\ndecline raises concerns, as Japan had set a target of attracting 60 million inbound tourists annually\nby 2030. To aid in the recovery of Japan’s tourism industry post-pandemic, I propose a method\nfor identifying the key elements that attract the attention of inbound tourists (focus points) by\nanalyzing reviews of tourist sites.\nCurrently, there is a lack of a comprehensive and objective approach to identifying the focus\npoints of tourist destinations. Previous studies have relied on subjective methods such as surveys\nand expert opinions, or utilized keyword extraction techniques that may not capture the full\nspectrum of factors influencing tourists’ preferences. In this thesis, I present a novel method that\ncombines keyword extraction, scoring based on motivational factors, and principal component\nanalysis to pinpoint the most attention-grabbing aspects of tourist spots. By applying this\nmethod to popular tourist destinations in Hokkaido, with a specific focus on Chinese tourists, my\nstudy provides valuable insights into the specific elements that hold the greatest appeal for this\nparticular group of visitors.\nIn the first phase of my research, I collected a substantial number of reviews from a prominent\nChinese travel industry website that focused on popular tourist spots in Hokkaido. The goal\nwas to extract relevant keywords from these reviews to uncover the potential points of interest\nfor Chinese tourists. I used two different kinds of keyword extraction methods: TF-IDF (term\nfrequency-inverse document frequency) and TextRank. Through my analysis, I found that the\nTF-IDF algorithm produced the most promising results in this study. By examining the extracted\nkeywords derived from TF-IDF, I was able to gain clear insights into the specific elements that\nChinese tourists prioritize when considering tourist destinations.\nBuilding on this foundation, I proceeded to extract high-frequency n-gram patterns from the\nreviews written by Chinese inbound tourists, with each n-gram pattern containing the previously\nextracted keywords. To assess the focus of each destination, I used seven types of motivational\nfactors commonly associated with tourist behavior and applied principal component analysis.\nThis allowed us to effectively quantify and identify the distinctive features and focus points of\neach tourist destination.\nSubsequently, I took my analysis a step further by clustering the n-gram patterns extracted\nfrom the tourists’ reviews. This clustering process allowed us to group similar patterns together\nand delve deeper into the underlying themes and characteristics that emerged from the reviews.\nBy carefully examining the clustering results, I was able to provide insightful advice and recommendations to improve the overall tourist experience and develop effective industry strategies\nbased on the identified areas of focus.\nThrough this comprehensive research approach, I aimed to provide valuable insights into the\npreferences and expectations of Chinese tourists when selecting and experiencing tourist sites\nin Hokkaido.
