An axially asymmetric stress problem of a transversely isotropic, short cylinder subjected to partial pressure on the side surface is solved by the generalized Elliott solution. The axially asymmetric stress problem of the short cylinder is much more complicated than that of an infinite or a long cylinder, because it requires two kinds of elasticity solution to satisfy boundary conditions at the end faces and side surface. The generalized Elliott solution yields two different elasticity solutions. Additional solutions are also used to deal with initial terms in Fourier series which are required to satisfy the boundary conditions. Magnesium and cadmium crystals and an isotropic material are treated in numerical calculations. The effect of anisotropy on ten stresses in the short cylinder in the short cylinder is investigated through comparison with the isotropic material.
