Fatigue tests were undertaken on the S35C steel specimens annealed for the study in the heading. The main object was to find how the cooperation of the configuration and the prestraining influences the fatigue strength of the specimens. It was found that the work-hardening effect due to the prestrain, and the stress gradient and the stress concentration near the entrance of the hole seem to work out behaviors peculiar to fatigue in cooperation with each other, such as the microplastic sliding, opening and closing of fatigue cracks, etc. The crack propagation rate dl/dN in this case became constant.
