The growth of slip bands and the propagation of cracks were simultaneously observed by the metaloscope of S 35 C plain test pieces under completely reversed torsional stress cycle. 1)The length of the slip bands and the cracks showed a similar tendency of change with the progress of the cycle. Throughout the total fatigue life the cracks are considered to be formed mostly from the persistent slip bands. 2)At the failure cycle the length of the slip bands was shorter and that of the cracks longer for the larger stress amplitude than for the smaller. As the cycle proceeds the cracks seem rather to start from the existent stress concentration sources than to trouble to develop slip lines or bands. 3)For each over-stress amplitude, smaller than the yielding point, the slip bands became visible at the cycle of about 1% of the failure cycle. 4)For the specimen anisotropic with the axially banded structure as the roII-effect, axial slip bands and cracks as well were predominant and for one which was made isotropic by the high temperature annealing, such predominance almost vanished. 5)The surface hardness of pearlite of the fatigued specimen was 0.97 to 1.12 times the hardness of the virgin specimen, the number being larger for the larger stress amplitude, while that of ferrite was just 0.90 to 0.98 times, without such relation with the amplitude.
