By the use of phase plane methods, the phenomenon were analyzed and the critical conditions for pulling the step were theoretically obtained. In these cases, however, the numbers of swing were not limited. In this paper, first, we develop an approximated theoretical analysis by approximating the limit cycle for the given phase plane equation. Based on this theory, the approximated theoretical formula is derived for the cylindrical rotor type. Secondly, we derive the numerical experimental formulae which fairly coincides the strict criterion. Thirdly, by using the testing machine of 15 [kVA], we get the experimental values in the case where no limit exists with the numbers of swing. These three values are well coincident with the exact theoretical values. At last, by using the phase plane method when field time constant does not exist, we proved exactly that the best phase angle is O [rad] and the worst angle is π [rad].
